Common Questions

TERMITES
  • How do I know I have a termite infestation?

According to the National Pest Management Association, telltale signs of a termite infestation include soft wood in your home, mud tubes on your home’s exterior, especially near the foundation, and darkening or blistering of wood structures. You’re most likely to see termites when they swarm in early spring. If you notice a swarm or any other signs of infestation, contact us immediately.

  • When is the best time for termite treatment?

It doesn’t matter what time of year it is, if you notice signs of an infestation, it’s important to contact a termite control professional right away. Even if you aren’t seeing signs of damage, it’s critical to take a proactive approach because damage can go undetected for years. Contact us now for a free estimate.

  • How long does it take to get rid of termites?

The product used at Advantage Termite and Pest Control starts working immediately and rids homes of termites fast. It offers long-term protection with a 10-year guarantee. It’s a good idea, though, to have your home inspected yearly to ensure the termites aren’t re-colonizing.

  • How is Advantage Termite and Pest Control’s treatment better than other methods?

Advantage Termite and Pest Control uses the country’s No. 1 termite defense product: Termidor®. It’s better than other liquids because it is undetectable, so termites won’t try to find a way around it. Its application has a Transfer Effect™ in which infected termites pass the termiticide/insecticide on to nestmates before dying. It’s a low-dose treatment with virtually no odor.

BED BUGS
  • How do I know I have a bed bug infestation?

Bed bugs are tiny and not easily seen. But if you notice brown or black stains or bloodstains on linens, mattresses, couch cushions or other furniture, you might have bed bugs. Also, be on the lookout for bed bug bites, which could appear as small, flat or raised spots on the hands, neck, face, shoulders, legs or arms that become inflamed, itchy, red or blistered.

  • I’m a good housekeeper. How did bed bugs get into my house?

Bed bugs should not be associated with dirty homes or sanitation problems. The pests are hardy and transient, hitching rides on luggage, clothing, and other personal belongings. You can pick them up anywhere – offices, stores, hotels, gyms, dorms, and other places.

  • What is a biopesticide and how is it more effective than other bed bug control methods?

Advantage Termite and Pest Control uses a fungal biopesticide for bed bug infestations, which is more effective and affordable than traditional pesticides or heat treatments. When beg bugs cross the application site, they pick up fatal fungal spores and carry them to other bed bugs. The need to reapply the product is much less frequent than other methods.

  • What do I have to do before the bed bug treatment application?

Homeowners play a critical role in eliminating bed bugs. At Advantage Termite and Pest Control, we give homeowners a prep sheet with tasks to complete prior to our biopesticide treatment. This includes instructions on how to properly clean furniture, launder bedding and other items, and vacuum.

RODENTS
  • How do I know I have a rodent infestation?

Common signs of a rodent infestation include mice or rat droppings, gnaw marks, and strange noises in the walls, especially at night. Also look for nests built out of shredded paper products, cotton, packing materials, wall insulation and fabrics. Keep in mind that if you see a mouse in the house, it’s probably not alone.

  • What diseases do mice and rats carry?

According to the National Pest Management Association, mice and rats are known to carry more than 35 diseases that can spread to humans. Among diseases associated with rodents are Hantavirus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, tularemia, and plague. That’s why it’s important to take steps to prevent a rodent infestation and contact pest control experts at the first sign of mice or rats.

  • How long does it take to get rid of mice and rats?

Advantage Termite and Pest Control uses bait to get a rodent infestation under control. Once bait has been placed, it can take four to five days for mice to find and eat it. Once eaten, the bait will kill mice within 24 hours. It takes slightly longer for rats.

  • How do I prevent mice from getting into my house?

One of the first things to do is seal cracks and holes on the exterior of your home using caulk, steel wool or a combination of the two. Other prevention strategies include installing door sweeps on exterior doors, repairing damaged screens, replacing loose mortar and weather stripping around the home’s foundation and windows, storing food in airtight containers, and taking the trash out regularly. It’s also important to keep attics, basements and crawl spaces dry and well ventilated.

OTHER PESTS
  • How long does it take to get rid of bugs?

The time it takes to eliminate pests varies depending on the type of pest and the severity of the infestation. But in general, bugs should be gone within a week. If they’re not, give us call.

  • When is the best time to treat for Asian beetles?

It’s important to treat for Asian beetles in early fall, before farmers harvest soybeans. At Advantage Termite and Pest Control, we apply insecticides to the home’s exterior in early fall to prevent the Asian beetles from entering the home. We also suggest sealing cracks and openings that serve as entry points for the pests.

  • How do I get rid of fleas?

Fleas reproduce quickly, so it’s important to call a pest control expert as soon as possible. At Advantage Termite and Pest Control, we use a growth regulator, which essentially is birth control for fleas. But homeowners play a major role in eliminating the pests. In addition to consulting a veterinarian about treating your pets and getting them on flea prevention treatments to prevent future issues, it’s also important to follow the cleaning instructions given by your pest control professionals. That includes washing linens, pet bedding and curtains; vacuuming carpets and furniture; and mopping floors. After the growth regulator treatment, homeowners must vacuum daily for seven days.

  • Should I be concerned if I see a spider in my house?

It’s common to see spiders in your home and most pose no threat, except black widow and brown recluse spiders. The best approach is to seal cracks around the exterior of your home with a silicone-based caulk and put screens on windows and doors to prevent spiders from getting inside. If you see multiple spiders and webs in your home, you may want to contact a pest control expert.

GENERAL QUESTIONS
  • Are the products you use safe for children and pets?

The pest control products we use at Advantage Termite and Pest Control are generally safe for both children and pets. But prior to service, let us know of any concerns and we will let you know if any precautions are necessary.

  • What is the benefit of having a service agreement?

A pest control service agreement provides homeowners and business owners peace of mind that termites and pests will be under control year-round. Advantage Termite and Pest Control offers service agreements on a monthly, quarterly, or semi-annual basis.

  • Do I need pest control treatments in the winter?

At Advantage Termite and Pest Control, we pride ourselves on only providing services that you need. With our service agreements, we treat homes and businesses in spring, summer and fall. But it’s not necessary to apply treatment in winter. In the case of rodents, however, you need to be vigilant in winter. Mice and rats seek shelter in cold months, so let us know if you suspect an infestation – any time of the year.

  • Do we have to leave our home when you’re providing the service?

No, it’s not necessary to leave your house before we provide termite or pest control services. The products we use are safe and virtually odor free.
